Job Title: Climate and Habitat Modeler/Scientist

Location: Remote

Clearance Required: Public Trust Eligible







Description (scope of work)
IBSS is seeking a scientist to facilitate and research the impacts of climate variability and change on the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (NES LME).







Key Responsibilities:

  • Revise, adapt, and develop climate, habitat, and ocean assessment methodology
  • Develop species distribution and habitat models that can be forced by physical and biological variables
  • Use state-of-the-art global climate models, Earth system models, and regional ocean models to assess historical and future impacts of climate variability and climate change
  • Incorporate global climate model and regional ocean model output into multispecies and ecosystem models
  • Analyze phytoplankton imagery and develop methods to compare in situ phytoplankton imagery with satellite derived composition algorithms
  • Incorporate remote sensing data and phytoplankton composition information in ecosystem models to fine tune food web dynamics
  • Produce relevant metadata for all modeling and remote sensing products
  • Coordinate and provide technical support for the development of climate, habitat, and ocean models/tools
  • Collaborate broadly with NOAA/NMFS, NOAA/GFDL, NEFSC, the University of Rhode Island, and others as needed to strategize and prioritize model development and data analysis
  • Keep abreast of NOAA and IT policies to ensure compliance and appropriate provision of climate, habitat, and ocean modeling software
  • Communication and outreach
  • Develop or coordinate training on different ecosystem and statistical modeling platforms
  • Create and update documentation for ecosystem and statistical models
  • Provide reports, briefings, and presentations on ecosystem and statistical models
  • Communicate the results of projects and activities to general and scientific audiences in written and oral formats Organize and participate in symposia at national and international conferences and workshops



Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:
  • At least four (4) years of experience (directly related to this requirement) and Master's degree in marine science, fisheries, quantitative ecology, oceanography, or similar or a PhD in a similar field
  • Experience with coding and statistical software (R, Matlab, IDL, Ferret, or Python) and working with netcdf files and metadata
  • Experience with global climate models, Earth system models, or regional ocean models
  • Experience with ocean color remote sensing and phytoplankton ecology
  • Proficient skills in communicating scientific results both verbally and in written form
  • Demonstrated experience with the use of empirical time-series data to build one or more of the following:
  • Species habitat models
  • Single species or multi-species population models
  • Ecosystem models
  • Biogeochemical models
  • Physical ocean models
